High Voltage Step-Up Transformers

High voltage step-up transformers are mainly used in our distribution of electricity to our homes and businesses. As electricity flows down the metal distribution wire, the electrons that carry its energy jiggle through the metal structure, crashing about and generally wasting energy. We may have notice that wires get hot when electricity flows through it. High voltage step-up transformers became popular when they found out that the higher the voltage electricity you use, and the lower the current, the less energy is wasted along the way. So high voltage step up transformer are used to carry the electricity from power plants and is send down the wires at extremely high voltages to save energy.

High voltage step-up transformers are used as we mention above, to save energy but there another reason too. Our homes and small businesses use 110-250 volts but large industrial plants with huge machines might use 10,000 to 30,000 volts. While smaller factories or machine shops may need 414 volts or more. It makes sense to ship high voltage electricity from the power station and then transform it to lower voltage when it reaches it various destinations. The high voltage is step down by using a step-down transformer to the correct voltage used by the different electrical client.

How does a High Voltage Step-Up Transformer works?

High voltage step-up transformer works like any other transformer. When a fluctuating electric current flows through a wire it generates a magnetic field. The strength of the magnetic flux density is directly related to the size of the electric current. The larger the current, the stronger the magnetic field. When a magnetic field fluctuates around a piece of wire, it generates an electric current in the wire. If we put a second coil of wire next to the first one, and send a fluctuating electric current into the first coil, we will create an electric current in the second wire. This is called electromagnetic induction. We can make electrical energy pass more efficiently from one coil to the other by wrapping them around a soft iron bar or which is called a core in a transformer.

To make a coil of wire, we simple curl the wire around into loops. If the second coil has the same number of turns as the first coil, the electric current in the second coil will be virtually the same size as the one in the coil. However, if we have more turns in the second coil, we can make the secondary current and voltage bigger than the primary current and voltage, hence calling it a high voltage step-up transformer. If we have more turns in the primary coil then the secondary we have a step-down transformer.
